When a lady of the house cooks food for the entire family, it is not just the food but it also strengthens affection and sense of belongingness among the members of the family. At the same time, the contribution of the chefs of the homes remains unsung most of the times. When the society is changing and the women in the families is also getting to workplaces, it is still more difficult to maintain work life balance and preparation of food of everyone’s taste. This was the aim of the unique event “Best Home Chef-2019” organised by Department of Hotel Management, Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology (GGNIMT), Ghumar Mandi.
The event was open to participants of all age groups. As many as 150 participants from all across the region participated in the event which included housewives, working women, students, amateur chefs and even male cooking enthusiasts. The participants belonged to different sectors of the society.
Mr. Sunil Kwatra , Vice President , Hotel Park Plaza was the Chief Guest for the occasion while Mrs. Simple Kwatra, Mrs. India Beauty Queen-2014 was the Guest of Honour for the day. They appreciated the Institute for organizing this mega event.
Prof. Manjeet Singh Chhabra, Director, GGNIMT accorded a warm welcome to the participants. He urged them to follow their heart while cooking and presenting their food item to emerge as winners.
The mega event was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp. For the first round; the participants brought one self-cooked vegetarian or non-vegetarian dish that they prepared at their homes. The dishes were starters, main course, snack or dessert. Dishes such as Lasagne Italian, Crispy Banana Tart, Yule Log, Dark Chocolate Organge Bayarian, Crispy babycorn chilly, Pangasius Bocourti with sauted veggies, Quinoa Salad with chick peas, Molten lava Cake, Panner Shashlik Sizzler,Chicken Dumplings, Rasmalai with pannacotta, Brinjal Raita, vegetable Nest, and Ravioli were the few creative dishes presented during the first round.
A panel of renowned judges was invited for the judgment. Mr. Rajinder Singh, Executive Chef, Munuchkin’s Restaurant, Mr. Ashween Masih, HR Manager, Nirvana Club & Hotel, Mr. Sukhbir Singh Brar, Sous Chef, Nirvana Club & Hotel , Mr. Suresh Kumar, Sous Chef, Regenta Central Klassik, Mr. Harpreet Singh, Assistant HR Manager, Regenta Central Klassik and Mr. Rosleen Singh, HOD, Dept. of Food Production and Tourism were the esteemed judges for the event. The judges shortlisted 20 participants for the next level after evaluating the dishes on the basis of taste, creativity, and vivid presentation. During the second round, participants were given Pumpkin( main ingredient), milk, bell peppers, macroni, bread, pasta, spinach, broccoli, frozen fruits, rice, spices, custard powder, pizza pasta sauce, etc.
Sunil Kwatra, Vice President, Park Plaza and Simple Kwatra, Mrs India Queen were the chief guests on the occasion. They distributed the prizes among the winners.
(Result sheet attached)……………………………. won a cash prize of Rs 5000 for being the ‘Best Home Chef-2019’, whereas bagged cash prize of same amount for being the ‘best Home Chef -2019 (Junior category). (Result sheet attached)…………………………and (Result sheet attached)………………..were the recipients of “Best innovative Dish (vegetarian)” and “Best innovative Dish (non-vegetarian)” awards. Similarly, “Best Presentation Vegetarian Dish” was awarded to (Result sheet attached)……………………………….. and “Best Presentation non-Vegetarian Dish” went to (Result sheet attached)……………………………….. Ten home chefs were also awarded the Appreciation Awards for their distinctive preparation and presentation.
Dr. Harpreet Singh, Principal, GGNIMT said that the event was intended to recognize the rising culinary talent. The competition is organized to build culinary community and pride in our culinary craft. It’s a great recruiting tool, he added.
Prof. Manjeet Singh Chhabra, Director, GGNIMT said that apart from evaluating taste, innovation and presentation, the cooking contest was also a testimony of chefs’ patience and his ability to manage time and stress.
The event concluded with the prize distribution ceremony. S. Gursharan Singh Narula, President, Gujranwala Khalsa Educational Council (GKEC), and Dr. S. P Singh, Former Vice Chancellor, GNDU & General Secretary, GKEC presided over the event. They congratulated the winners for their brilliant efforts.
