On one hand we are creating Mountains of Solid Waste, while on the other we are contaminating our food with pesticides and chemical fertilisers, Are we in an Overdrive mode to destroy our existence? Was the question posed by Mrs. Baljeet Kaur, Social Activist and Founder, Youth Empowerment Federation. She was interacting with students of NSS Unit of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology (GGNIMT), Civil Lines, Ludhiana during the Seminar Solid Waste Management & Kitchen Nurseries. She advocated that it is important for each individual, each household and each neighbourhood to introspect, audit and adopt a holistic approach to the management of Waste. Though it is important that we minimise the waste generated by changing our consumption habits, but as some amount of waste is bound to be generated, we should adopt eco friendly methods to manage it. She explained the various measures that could be taken up for effective management, and emphasised that perhaps the best would be to use the solid waste as compost for nourishing and growing plants in kitchen gardens. She asked the students to pledge that they would not only recycle the waste generated at their homes but also spread this message to their friends and neighbours.
Prof. Manjit Singh Chhabra, Director GGNIMT welcomed Mrs. Baljeet Kaur and appreciated her initiative in networking and motivating the students to participate in the noble cause of preserving the environment and also practising sustainable lifestyle practices. Vote of Thanks to Mrs. Baljeet Kaur was proposed by Prof. Gurleen Kaur, Co-ordinator NSS Unit of GGNIMT. Dr. Parvinder Singh, Principal GGNIMT appreciated the initiative and efforts of Prof. Jagmeet Singh, Co-ordinator GGNIMT for organising the Seminar and also hoped that GGNIMTians would be the Change Agents for altered behaviour towards Solid Waste and its Management. Harjot an NSS student felt the Seminar helped him understand how a chronic problem like solid waste could be converted into an opportunity as a nutrient for kitchen nurseries. Jaspreet another student was enthused to not only start a kitchen nursery, but also pledged that she would network with her friends to spread awareness in the youth about this opportunity.
